Juluka a Zulu word for Sweat. Johnny and Sipho met in 1970.
Jonathan Paul Clegg, OBE, OIS (7 June 1953 – 16 July 2019) was born in England, grew up in Zimbabwe and came to South Africa, with his mother, when he was six. From his early years, he was interested in the African culture and learnt to play guitar, and Inhlangwini dancing, from his Zulu flat-cleaner, Charlie Mzila, who introduced Johnny to the Zulu migrant-worker community in and around Johannesburg. Johnny spent most of his spare time acquiring knowledge from them about all the Zulu customs and music.
When he finished school, Johnny registered for a BA degree in Social Anthropology at the University of the Witwatersrand. He later lectured in this subject at the University.
Sipho Mchunu, who was born in Kranskop, KwaZulu-Natal, grew up herding cattle. At the age of 16 he made his first guitar out of a paraffin tin but soon bought himself a guitar and became well versed in the Zulu street music. He formed his own dance team as well. In 1969 he arrived in Johannesburg and began working as a gardener.
This song is from the compilation album "Sounds Around", released in 1984.
