Kamran Ince is probably one of the most important Turkish composers of the 20th-21st Century. Having American nationality by birth, he was educated both in Turkey and the USA, and has ever since lived between the two countries. His musical style is neoromantic and his interests lie on history, both past and current. Three of his five symphonies deal with historical topics; the two most important are his Second “Fall of Constantinople” and his third “The Siege of Vienna”, both depicting important moments in the history of the Turkish people. In “The Siege of Vienna”, Ince depicts the downfall of the almighty Ottoman army, crushed while trying to capture the Habsburg capital for the second time in 1683, signaling the beginning of Austrian supremacy over Southeastern Europe. To do so, Ince makes use of avant-garde effects, minimalist schemes, modal scales and Turkish styled melodies, making a “synthesis of East and West”.
