Kevin Costner's Deep Regrets About 'One True Love' Whitney Houston
Many admirers were taken aback when Whitney Houston's Bodyguard co-star Kevin Costner gave the eulogy at her funeral in February 2012. They were unaware that, two decades after the release of the movie, the two superstars still had a strong bond.
Costner's public remarks over her death, which occurred when she was 48 years old, revealed details about their relationship. "I failed her. Through Digital Spy, he stated, "I should have been there, and I wasn't." "I will now have to endure that discomfort for the remainder of my life. I should have saved her today, but I saved her then. My one genuine love was her. "I Will Always Love You" is still my ringtone, and I take it as a badge of pride whenever I am made fun of for it."
A week after her death, he gave a heartfelt 17-minute eulogy in which Costner's affection for Houston was evident.
"You were as gorgeous as a lady could be; you weren't merely pretty. "Whitney, people loved you, not just liked you," the now 70-year-old star said to the mourning. "I was your pretend bodyguard once, not so long ago, and now you're gone too soon, leaving us with memories of a little girl who stepped bravely in front of this church, in front of the ones that loved you first, in front of the ones that loved you best and loved you the longest."
Costner made an effort to support her behind the scenes while she battled addiction and her tense marriage to Bobby Brown. Later in 2012, he told Anderson Cooper that he wrote her encouraging letters, but he's not sure if they ever got through.
"There are some people that really love Whitney, and a couple of times during the last seven, eight years, they asked me, would I write her a letter?" He reminded the reporter. She would never be far from me and would always be someone I valued. "When someone asks you to write a letter to someone you know is struggling, I did," he continued. "I don't know if those letters were ever read."
On the Armchair Expert podcast in June 2024, Costner reminisced about his love for Houston and how he shielded her in her first significant acting performance.
"I started to guide her," Costner disclosed. "I had promised her that I wouldn't f-k my director, Mick Jackson, but I wasn't attempting to displace him. Whitney will do well in it, I had assured her. In the song, I promised her that she would always love me.
Because Houston's family trusted Costner with her, it's heartwarming to hear about his unwavering affection for her, even in death. They always knew he loved her the most, despite the fact that he was unable to protect her from her troubles.
