Description
North Africa has some of the hardest grooving rhythms on the planet, and the Moroccan Chaabi is definitely one of them. Chaabi is a party rhythm that is used for marriages and other festive occasions, and it is usually played using a mix of live percussion like derbouka and , drum kit and a programmed keyboard rhythm. People often talk about how strange it feels to play the bass drum so "off beat". I think it feels great! The downbeat is not on the one in this music but rather on the 3rd quarter note. And why not? To a Moroccan, it's not strange at all.
This is one of my favourite Chaabi tracks, "Kif El Ada" by singer and violinist Zina Daoudia.
I tried to copy the basic drum parts, but there are too many small variations to remember everything note by note, and also the drums seem to move randomly between the snare and various toms in a way I couldn't get my head around.
