DAY 1 - Machame Gate (5,380 ft) to Machame Camp (9,350 ft)
11 km (roughly 7 hours) of rainforest

DAY 2 - Machame Camp (9,350 ft) to Shira Camp (12,500 ft)
5 km (roughly 7 hours) through more arid, rocky land with sparser vegetation

DAY 3 - Shira Camp (12,500 ft) to Lava Tower (15,190 ft) to acclimatize, to Barranco Camp (13,044 ft)
11 km (roughly 8 hours) through alpine desert, through rain clouds

DAY 4 - Barranco Camp (13,044 ft) to Karanga Camp (13,106 ft)
5 km (roughly 5 hours) up a 900ft cliff face (Barranco Wall) and through a further stretch of alpine desert

DAY 5 - Karanga Camp (13,106 ft) to Barafu Camp (15,331 ft)
4 km (roughly 5 hours) through further alpine desert

DAY 6 - Summit Day! Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak (19,341 ft)
Sleeping through late afternoon, we woke and started hiking at midnight. This is the most challenging, demanding part of the climb. Many of us experienced hallucinations and sleepwalking, and water, camera equipment and zips on clothing froze. Reaching Stella Point (18,900 ft) at sunrise, we witnessed the sun burst through the clouds turning from deep red to orange to yellow, with every colour in between. A final few hundred metres complete the 5km (8 hour) trek to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.

DAY 6 CONTINUED - Uhuru Peak (19,341 ft) to Mweka Camp (10,065 ft)
Sliding down the arid, dusty slopes for 12 km, we descended back into the oxygenated rainforests (6 hours).

DAY 7 - Mweka Camp (10,065 ft) to Mweka Gate (5,380 ft)
10 km (3 hours) of rainforest, and the climb was complete!
