A traditional Korean mask dance has been inscribed onto UNESCO's list of Intangible Cultural Heritage.
It becomes the 22nd Korean heritage to be added to the list.

On Wednesday, the Korean traditional mask dance, also known as 'talchum' was added to the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list.
During the 17th session of UNESCO's Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Rabat, Morocco, the committee decided to add talchum, the South Korean mask dance drama, to the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
After examining South Korea's nomination, the committee noted that "the element is manifested through the oral traditions, performing arts, social practices and rituals of its dances, music and theater and the traditional craftsmanship of the masks", adding that talchum's message of universal equality and criticism of social hierarchy is still relevant today, further praising its role as a symbol of the respective cultural identities its variant forms still represent today.
The latest addition raised the number of South Korean entries on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage lists to 22,.. after the Lantern Lighting Festival, or "Yeondeunghoe" in Korean, was added to the list in 2020.
Another new addition to the list was the Pyeongyang raengmyeon custom submitted by North Korea.
Literally translated "Pyeongyang cold noodles", the dish is known for its chilled beef broth that has a bland, savory flavor.
This has raised entries from North Korea to four, with three others being North Korean versions of the traditional Korean folk song "Arirang," the tradition of making North Korean kimchi, and ssireum, which was inscribed on the Representative List in 2018 following joint efforts by South and North Korea.
