Description
La Cantigas de Santa Maria - 13thc Spanish Music
Master Antonio Giordano da Sicilia, Kingdom of the West
The Cantigas de Santa Maria were composed at the Court of King Alfonso X or Alfonso El Sabio (“The Wise”) of Castile and Leon during the second half of the 13th century. They were not written in Castilian; rather, the Cantigas are a vast and encyclopedic repertory of poetry set to music in medieval Galician-Portuguese. The over 420 compositions include 353 narratives of miracles of the Blessed Virgin Mary as well as a large number of devotional and liturgical poems. These Cantigas are thus more than a body of literature or a miracle collection; rather, they are a cultural project of great importance for medieval literature, music, and art and ultimately, a Catholic expression of what would become the Spanish Monarchy.
