Lyrics and Explanation -
1st Verse:
Spain and France get Florida
'til the French & Indian War
Then the British take control
'til revolution shut the door
Spain took back both East and West
But we fought and paid them more
To have the 27th state
Without the Seminole
In a confederate role
Explanation of the 1st Verse:
In 1513 Spain "discovered" Florida. Over the following three hundred years Spain and France had colonies in Florida.
Britain took control of Florida in 1763 after the French and Indian War.
In 1783, when we beat the British during the American Revolution, Spain regained control of both of the Florida territories (east and west).
The US purchased Florida from Spain and made it the 27th state.
The US sent troops into Florida to remove the indigenous Indian population so that settlers could inhabit Florida safely.
Florida was one of the first states to secede from the union, joining the Confederate States of America before the Civil war.
Chorus:
Ponce Ponce de Leon
In search of youth he stumbles on
La Florida, old days are gone
This must be it - a land so flowery
British here split west to east
Pensacola to St. Augustine
Now these sunny Florida territories
Come together at Tallahassee
Explanation of the Chorus:
Ponce de Leon is believed to be the first European to find Florida, even though there are claims that he encountered at least one indigenous inhabitant that spoke Spanish.
Ponce de Leon was searching for the Fountain of Youth and upon arriving in Florida he believed that he had found it.
Because of the lush tropical environment, he called it La Florida which means "flowery land."
Spain controlled much of Florida for hundreds of years, but after the French and Indian War, Britain gained control of it.
Britain believed that Florida was too large to govern so they split it into the Eastern Florida Territory and the Western Florida Territory. St. Augustine was the governing/controlling colony in the east and Pensacola was the governing/controlling colony in the west.
Once Florida became a state of the US, we made Tallahassee the capital city because it is roughly halfway between St. Augustine and Pensacola.
2nd Verse:
Panhandle, Alabama above
And Georgia the connected states
This tropical peninsula
Mostly low with land and lakes
Between the Gulf of Mexico, and Atlantic
To the south the Florida Straits
More than 1,300 miles of coastline awaits
Prepared for hurricanes

Bridge:
Where In God we trust
That the sunshine state will shine on us
Then in Miami..
Where the orange blossoms and mocking birds they meet
Under palmetto trees

3rd Verse:
Agriculture like cattle farming, sugar
Citrus at its best
Industry and construction
Builds on this paradise, oh yes
Yea air conditioning make us cool
Create a tourism treasure chest
Come on down to the south east and take a rest
At our beaches and parks you'll be our guest
