Description
Ziad Rahbani, the legendary Lebanese composer, playwright, pianist, and political provocateur—and eldest son of iconic singer Fairuz—has passed away at the age of 69, according to the National News Agency. Born in 1956 in Antelias, near Beirut, Rahbani emerged as a groundbreaking artistic force in both music and theater. He broke from traditional musical conventions by blending Arabic melodies with jazz, funk, and Western elements. His landmark 1974 play Nazl el-Sourour (Happiness Hotel) and subsequent works offered incisive political satire and social commentary. Lebanese leaders, including President Joseph Aoun and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, have hailed him as an intellectual and cultural beacon whose voice resonated with generations. Mr. Rahbani is survived by his mother, Fairuz, and his siblings.
