About The Album:
Legacy is a landmark album that unites two iconic figures of Indian music—Asha Bhosle and Ustad Ali Akbar Khan—in a rare and historic classical collaboration. Released in 1995, the album marks a departure for Asha Bhosle, best known for her playback singing in Indian cinema, as she immerses herself in the depth and discipline of Hindustani classical music. Guided by sarod maestro Ali Akbar Khan, a torchbearer of the Seni-Maihar Gharana, the album features traditional compositions passed down through generations, some dating back to the 16th century.
In preparation for this project, Asha Bhosle underwent the ganda-bandhan ceremony, symbolically becoming Khan’s disciple—a powerful gesture reflecting her commitment to the classical form. The music is rooted in intricate ragas and bandishes, accompanied by the soulful strains of the sarod, and arranged with simplicity to preserve their authenticity.
Legacy is more than an album—it is a cultural and historical testament to the guru-shishya tradition, offering a glimpse into the timeless treasures of Hindustani classical music.
