Program Notes:
Listed as one of the best ancient Chinese music pieces, Lofty Mountains and Flowing Water, was composed by Bo Ya (伯牙) for Gu Qin (古琴, a plucked seven-string Chinese instrument) before 221 BC, describing the scene and sound of majestic and lofty mountains with flowing water, and it represents cherished friendship in Chinese culture.
Based on a version for Pipa (琵琶), this variation is written specifically for a string quartet, to present the special string fingering techniques of this ancient Chinese string instrument. The famous tunes are arranged to appear in different registers to allow each string quartet instrument to have its show time in this piece.
