Description
At the beginning of World War II Rupert Grant known as "Lord Invader" became very popular in Trinidad, especially among U.S. and Canadian servicemen stationed there. He was the original singer for the song "Rum and Coca Cola." Morey Amsterdam an American who was part of a USO group entertaining the service personnel, heard Invader sing the song. Amsterdam took the song to New York, and with some slight changes to the lyrics copyrighted it.
Rum and Coca Cola was also said to be the most celebrated plagiarism trial to that time. It was established that Rupert Grant (Lord Invader) and Lionel Belasso were the original composers of the song rather than Morey Amsterdam.
