Beautiful Oscar-winning piece of music.
This is a good example of where (as in many cases) the song is easier to play than it sounds, because almost the entire melody comes from within each chord.
For example, if you use an A minor shape, that gives you most of the melody for the first part of the song (main verse part).
Likewise, when you change to E7 (leaving that 4th string open) you’ll have the notes for the next part and so forth. That’s why songs like this sound good strummed - all the notes are already in that mix of sound you create.
It also illustrates why you don’t need to add in riffs or play complex shapes up the neck a lot of the time. The chords will often do that work for you and a capo will take you almost anywhere on the neck if needed (good for Smiths type stuff where it’s more jangly).
