Description
Jean-Baptiste Lully (Giovanni Battista Lulli), originally the son of Tuscan millers, rose from performing in small shows in Florence to becoming the music superintendent for King Louis XIV and his personal secretary. His journey began when he caught the attention of Anne-Marie-Louise d'Orléans, who brought him to France to teach her Italian. Lully's musical talents grew through connections with composers like François Roberday and Michel Lambert. After the noblewoman's exile, Lully stayed at the French court, where he gained favor with the young Louis XIV. His ambition and skills led him to become the king's music superintendent and personal secretary. However, tensions between the king and Lully arose in 1685 due to a suspected affair with a court page, since the French Catholic Church had negative views of homosexuality and comedie ballet. Lully's death came in 1687 after he accidentally injured his foot while conducting a celebration for the king's recovery.
Lully's music was known for its dynamic, emotional range, from lively fast movements to deeply emotional slower ones. He revolutionized French court dances, replacing slow, stately movements with energetic, rapid ballets based on popular dance styles like gavottes, menuets, and sarabandes.
