The Awa Odori festival is held annually from August 12 to 15 in Tokushima City, Tokushima Prefecture. The festival, which boasts a 400-year history, attracts more than one million visitors from home and abroad.
There are three main theories as to its origins:
1. The townspeople of Tokushima Castle danced when the lord of the castle took up residence in Tokushima Castle.
2. The dance evolved from the Bon Odori (a dance performed in summer to honor ancestors).
3. The dance derives from the Furyu Odori, which is considered to be the origin of Noh theatre (a form of traditional Japanese theatre).
Today, Awa Odori events are held throughout the country, making it a proudly world-class traditional art form.
