It was our last ship, our last carrier, with the few remnants of our people, with so few interceptors to protect us. The aliens took control of our home planet, their numbers swarming our land and decimating our ground army, our zealot soldiers and dragoon tanks lies now in shambles. The remains of our Phoenix armada was sent to distract the invaders, to give us one single tiny chance to escape, they were sent to their death... and we never had to ask them for it. The portal wasn't far, the red evening sky looked deceptively calm, the desert was all we have beneath us. We were close now, we activate the portal, so that he could reveal himself from the sand. We could already see the rocky soil shattering, followed by the ignition lights. Hope grew in our countenances, a fool's hope. The ground began to convulse, as far as the eye can see we saw the sand moving. We were deceived. They were there all the time, thousands, millions, it didn't matter, hundreds could bring us down. The interceptors were launched ... and destroyed, now only the carrier's shield remained, the portal was close, but at the same time so far, we could see the sky on the other side, a pleasant and starry night, the moons reflecting off the sea ... our shield was defeated, the ship was shaking with the impact of the alien artillery. Fire, Smoke, Blood, we got so close. One last thought occurred while we could already imagine the smell of wet earth within reach, if only we had not wasted our strength in disputes over land and conflicts of ideology... Screams, crying, despair, I was brought back to reality, to the inevitable doom, to the end.
