One of Glenn Miller’s most famous and loved recordings first aired in the U.S. in May 1939.

Although it is highly likely the big band track was as popular in Australia as it was in many other countries, it is not possible to determine its initial 1939 chart success in the Antipodes, because national top 40 listings have never been compiled for the period prior to World War 2.

This version was subsequently re-released as a 78 single on the ‘HMV label’ in 1947 (without charting), and again, seven years later, presumably to coincide with the popularity of the ‘Universal-International’ film, ‘The Glenn Miller Story’. That latter single release was eventually deemed to have peaked at the #18 national position in the Australian winter of 1954. J
