Description
North Carolina's Division of Motor Vehicles is facing a worsening customer service crisis, with average wait times jumping 15.5% since 2019, according to a state audit released Monday.
The audit by State Auditor Dave Boliek found that customers now wait an average of 1 hour and 15 minutes for service, with nearly 14% of visits exceeding 2.5 hours in fiscal year 2025 — a roughly 79% increase from 2019.
"It's time to solve the DMV problem," Boliek said. "North Carolina has the will and the tools to make our DMV better."
The performance audit identified staffing shortages as a key factor, with roughly 160 vacancies among driver license examiner positions. While North Carolina's population has grown by 2.5 million people over the past 20 years, the state has added only 52 examiner positions.
