I was inspired by a poem written by Emma O'Connell, and wanted to set her lovely words to music.
Lyrics by Emma O'Connell:
Spring has come—I saw her there—
With stars caught in her burnished hair—
And where she stepped, the grass-shoots sprang,
The air with joyful birdsong rang;
She scattered blossom in her wake,
And Winter died for her sweet sake.
The Queen of May, the Hope Renewed!
Garlands twined her slender form;
Veiled by mist and sparkling dew,
Face turned to the limpid sky,
She bade the sunlight bathe and warm
The flowers that bowed as she passed by.
At her touch, the darkness fled—
I saw it go—I raised my head—
And breathed in deep the perfumed air.
Spring has come, so wise, so fair,
And wakened all the sleeping land
With scattered star-dust from her hand.
