First time I heard "In time," by Sly and the Family Stone, my jaw dropped to the floor. That was the moment when I realized that Bay Area funk from the 1970s was something totally unique and in a category of it's own. I've been studying this music for close to 20 years now, trying to decode what is so special about these syncopated rhythms. How do you make people dance without having to hit beats 2 and 4 on the drums. To me, "In Time" is where it all started. Sly made it possible. So this is my mini tribute to the master.
