Description

The Pease Branle performed by Atlanta Historic Dance.

This Branle is attributed to Arbeau/Adrian le Roy (c.1520-1598)

The Branle began in the 12th-century French chain dance. Branle comes from the French verb branler which means to shake, wave, sway, wag, wobble. This word is used to refer to the side-to-side movement that the dancers perform while in a circle. The Branle was then adopted by European elite between 1450 and 1650. The dances were especially popular in France where they began, but were also popular in England where the word "branle" got anglicized to “brawl.

The jumping allowed men to show up their athletic prowess.

This video is from a performance of Atlanta Historic Dance and Lauda Musicam of Atlanta. In this collaborative concert Lauda Musicam performed early dance music as Atlanta Historic Dane performed.
