2014-12-14 “The prayer of faith shall save the sick” (James 5:15) & “Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever” (Hebrews 13:8). James is written to Israel (James 1:1), and the context of James 5 is Israel going through the tribulation period. They must endure unto the end to be saved. The people in James 5:14 are sick due to falling in sin, much like Peter in Luke 22:31-34, 57-61. Sin is also the context of James 5:15-20. Elijah is given as an example of a man, who came out of sin, through whom God performed miracles. If the elders of the believing remnant of Israel pray for believers, who are sick, due to unbelief, their pray will cause the sick to be healed, in that they will believe, as well. Then, because they are abiding in belief, God will perform signs through them to confirm the pure gospel message that they now preach so that others may be saved, just like God did through Elijah. The anointing with oil is a type of being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. This does not apply today, because we are not Israel, we are not going through the tribulation period, and God does not perform physical miracles through us today. Hebrews 13:8 refers to Jesus Christ’s example of faith. He always has faith in the Father. This makes Him the same yesterday, to day, and for ever. He does not operate the same all the time. If He did, there would be no virgin birth, no second coming, no judgment, etc. The Hebrews are to follow his example of faith, regardless of the tribulations that come their way.
