Description
In June of 2012, Dennis Kamakahi came to Kauaʻi to help us with a Songwriterʻs workshop in Kōkeʻe. Not only did he share music theory and lessons that would help us, but he took the time to help us individually with our craft and inspired us with both songs we were familiar with as well as a beautiful composition he created for his wife in his cabin the night before our last day together.
Obviously, he was a master of his instrument and the art of haku mele, but what I appreciate most of all, was his style of teaching. He was approachable and led by example with humility. His encouragement to document "moments" in life and to honor others with a song will forever motivate me. And whenever someone wants to learn something from me, I will gladly share without hesitation and with aloha, because that is what he did for me more than once.
Na Ke Akua ʻo ia e hapai aku. This world is a better place because he was in it.
