But the official victory could not impede the Morisco musical art infiltrated into Andalusian folklore to fertilize flamenco; mixed in the crucible of marginalization with Gypsies and wanderers of all kind, the last Moriscos bequeathed to Spanish musical DNA their melismas: that unmistakable way to vocalize that will turn any present Andalusian head when the muezzin calls to prayer. Let’s hear how those ancient, artistic brothers join today their voices, how atavistic memories of a distant past go through times and distances to be reborn as a living, breathing music, a music of ours.

Con la expulsión en el siglo XVII de los últimos moriscos de Granada herederos de los primerísimos musulmanes allí asentados, venidos de Siria el canto andalusí pareció haber sido condenado al confinamiento en el recuerdo de los desterrados; pero la victoria oficial no pudo impedir que el arte musical morisco se infiltrara en el folklore andaluz para fecundar el flamenco. Mezclados en el crisol de la marginación con gitanos y trashumantes de toda laya, los últimos moriscos legaron al ADN musical andaluz sus melismas: esa inconfundible manera de vocalizar que, más allá de pruebas musicológicas, hace girar la cabeza a cualquier español cuando oye el canto del almuédano. Escuchemos cómo esos ancestrales parientes artísticos unen hoy sus voces para hacerse música nuestra, viva y palpitante.
