In 2010 I had the honour of playing with Zakir Hussain at the opening night of Celtic Connections, on a show called ‘Pulse of the World’ and then in 2012 we performed it on the Asia Stage as part of the BT River of Music events during the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad.
These gigs were some of my biggest musical highlights so far, shortly followed by one of my biggest regrets in music. Zakir wanted to take the Pulse of the World show on tour in India and America and sadly I wasn’t free for any of the tour dates, it still annoys me now!
A few years later when recording my album ‘Sanctuary’ I asked him if he would record some tabla for the album and he very graciously agreed. He was a huge inspiration to me so you can imagine my delight at having him on the album!
I remember him as being full of fun and very humble for a man of his stature.
The world has lost one of the true greats and I’m very glad that I got to spend the time I did with him!
