Description
Cassette Recording,1980, from a folk club in the West of England - converted to this video April 2022. This song is about a chimney sweep named Jack Hall. He was hanged at Tyburn for burglary of a house. This was the main place in London for execution of criminals and convicted traitors. On his execution day in 1707, Jack Hall would have been transported in an open horse drawn cart for three miles, from Newgate prison to Tyburn gallows.
In the 1850s the song also became known as Sam Hall, with place name changed to Cootehill in Ireland.
