When this song was first heard over the radio my immediate reaction was to stop in my tracks to listen, captivated by the catchy introductory strum of guitar strings, the song's gentle melody, and that smooth and resonant voice of Scott McKenzie.

That was the time when the war in Vietnam was escalating and images of US casualties and troops battling the Vietcong began to take centre-spread in the weekly publications of Time and Newsweek as the months progressed. The result was a growing dissent among the youth and the American public against sending troops to Vietnam to fight in a war that seemed to have no end in sight.

This is a beautiful hit song sung beautifully by Scott McKenzie that was hugely popular and appreciated around the world during a difficult period in world history.

Released on May 13, 1967, the song was an instant success and it scored number four on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States, where it remained for four consecutive weeks. Across the Atlantic, it made the number one spot in the United Kingdom and much of Europe. It remains a much liked song even to this day.
