Description
Work: 4 Ogives by Erik Satie
Performed by: PianoExplained
Composed by Erik Satie (1866 - 1925) in the late 1880's, 4 Ogives are the first pieces / collection that Satie published under his own name. Featuring slow and calm melodies, 4 Ogives broke traditional boundaries, in the sense that none of these pieces actually have bar lines, thus releasing the music from one of its most basic constraints: stress.
The fortissimo passages contain octaves on both hands with full chords, creating a sense of grandiosity and majesty. As an ogive refers to the arched curve that can often be found in cathedrals and churches, it is possible that Satie had them in mind when he wrote the 4 Ogives.
All pictures and piano scores are available in the public domain from International Music Score Library Project (IMSLP).
