The song was written by Barry Manilow. And actually the first time I ever heard it, was .....on the muppet show. With Liza Minelli as a guest star.
And they did a rendition of the song based on the lyrics, with many muppets involved.

And even though it's an uptempo latin-disco dance song, the lyrics tell a very sad story. But maybe the bright coloured music, is trying to exorcise the sadness of the lyrics.
And maybe Lola is feeling a little bit better each passing day, dancing the night away at the Copa.
