Description
Justice for Debbie Deb!! βοΈ This aspect of sampling drives me crazy: when the person whose voice you hear in the sample doesnβt make a single dime from itβs use in the new song! Debbie Deb got roughly $100, a one time only fee, for her vocals on the 1983 freestyle classic βWhen I Hear Music.β
So when Kendrick Lamar licensed the sample for use in his 2024 song βSquabble Upβ, he cleared it with the label and publisher...but as a non-writer, Deb got squat. And before chiming in the comments with βwell, itβs her fault for signing the contractβ remember: she was 17 years old with zero industry experience and no team behind her to help get her a fair deal. Maybe the problem is our copyright laws (indeed most of our laws, period) tend to favor those who already have power? Just sayinβ π³
And to be clear: Kendrick has no legal obligation to pay her; but he can help make things right, perhaps by getting her on a remix, or taking her on tour? Again he doesn't *have to* do anything further; but sometimes you can do the right thing even if it's not legally required.
