The seminal recording of the classic folk/calypso/rock song by The Kingston Trio from their eponymous debut album from 1958. Though the Kingstons were probably the third to record the song (after The Weavers and The Lyn Murray Singers), it was their version that was heard by Al Jardine of The Beach Boys and brought to that group by him, just as surely as were the KT's signature striped shirts. The Kingston Trio's version remains unique among the many recorded for the quiet, almost desperate urgency of their performance, a far cry from the rollicking sound favored by nearly every other artist.
