Description
The St. Louis Symphony Orchestra's Songs of America series continues by reflecting on the anniversary of the March on Washington—the August 28, 1963, march that advocated for the civic and economic equity of people of color in the United States during which Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., delivered his famous “I Have A Dream” speech.
“Deep River,” a beloved African-American spiritual about the quest for freedom passed down through generations, is performed by SLSO violists Michael Casimir and Andrew Francois, with pianist Peter Henderson.
This eighth installment of the SLSO’s Songs of America project, an exploration of American voices in music, reflects on what has changed for marginalized Americans and the work the country still needs to do. The SLSO pays homage to those who sacrificed for a better future and those who still work to achieve equity for all through this moving interpretation of “Deep River.”
