In 2017, the Cologne Male Voice Choir (Kölner Männer-Gesang-Verein, KMGV) celebrated its 175 year anniversary. It was founded in 1842 to raise money to continue building the Cologne Cathedral, a purpose shared with the Zentral-Dombau-Verein (ZDV) that was established at the same time. The anniversary concert on June 24, 2017 was a joint celebration of ZDV and KMGV.
A young man's courtship song (performed by an mezzo-soprano singer) is echoed and accompanied - and maybe slightly ridiculed - by a chorus of men. The original version was written for voices and piano. Franz Schubert wrote this piece for voices and piano. The orchestra arrangement was created after his death by fellow Austrian Felix Mottl.
