Stuart wrote this song in 1954. He was hunting with his friend John Wayne one day and they came upon a shack. They discovered a body of a man inside guarded by his faithful dog. Afterward, he came up with this song.He recorded it and it went to #2 on the country charts. It also made the top 30 pop charts. Rosemary Clooney recorded it later that year and it peaked at #12 on the charts.
