Description
“Mirie it is while Sumer ilast” is the earliest Middle English surviving song. Though brief, I find it truly emotional and spiritual. You can find the translation below, together with my own links. Enjoy!
Lyrics:
“Mirie it is while sumer ilast
With fugheles son,
Oc nu necheth windes blast
And weder strong.
Ej! Ej! what this nicht is long,
And ich with wel michel wrong
Soregh and murne and fast.”
English translation:
“Merry it is when summer lasts
with the sound of bird song.
Oh, but now the cold wind blasts,
it blows so strong.
Oh, oh, but this night is long
And it does to me much wrong:
sorrow and mourn and starve.”
