Written by Barry, Robin and Maurice Gibb the song is supposedly about someone who has done or said something horribly wrong, which results in feelings of social alienation. Others have described it as quite spiritual and could in fact be dealing with the Christian savior himself. Robin Gibb talked in 2009 about "I Started a Joke": "This is a very spiritual song.
