And now for something completely different from the pedal steel. I took up the banjo in 2014 because I liked its role and sound in bluegrass music. After a lot of practising, here are the banjo parts for the Dillards instrumental number on their 1963 Back Porch Bluegrass album, Doug’s Tune.

As the record demonstrates, Doug Dillard plays the banjo parts at a blazingly fast tempo, one which would be unrealistic for me to reach.

There are 8 distinct parts to the tune some of which are repeated at different parts of the song. For each part I play the banjo parts slowly.

The 8 parts are as accurate as I could figure them out to be. For example there are two variations of the C major chord played by Doug and these are played where they should appear in the various parts. Likewise at the end of each part, Doug plays a little riff of which there are three variations.

For this video, I used a secondhand Canon G7X which has a much superior HD video capability compared with the old Ricoh GX200.

No separately recorded audio. The audio was captured using the onboard mic on the Canon G7X.
