Description
Earl Zebedee Hooker (1/15/1930 - 4/21/1970) was a bluesman well regarded for his slide playing. As an early adaptor of the electric guitar, he was highly influenced by Robert Nighthawk and T-Bone Walker. Hooker is most well-known for his instrumental of "Blue Guitar," which was later overdubbed by Muddy Waters with the lyrics written by Willie Dixon and re-titled as "You Shook Me." Led Zeppelin would later introduce it to a much wider audience on their self-titled release in 1968.
Another one of his instrumentals had lyrics added by Willie Dixon and was also cut by Waters as "You Need Love." With some additional phrasing borrowed from the Small Faces version, Led Zeppelin would rework it as "Whole Lotta Love." He also played guitar on the Blues classic, "Messin With The Kid," recorded by childhood friend Junior Wells.
Stricken by tuberculosis at an early age, he passed away prematurely at the age of 40 and lays in eternal rest at Restvale Cemetery in Alsip, Ilinois.
