The Lumineers cover of “A song for you” by Leon Russell for Willie Nelson’s 90 Birthday Celebration at the Hollywood Bowl 4/29/23 — Don't ask me how or why the LA Times could bag the Hell out of this wonderful Lumineers rendition of this song.

The Lumineers cover of A Song For You, was beautiful. Period. It was filled with bare bones, simplicity of the line. Not tearing up the scenery. No, it wasn't the Leon Russell version. No. It didn't come up from the bottom of a dirty ash tray in the back of some bar. No. It was a sober, straight forward telling of the song, which was new and it worked for me.

I'm so sorry if this kind of - laid bare, stripped down, honest emotion in a sober way - presentation of the song makes some unimpressed, but it sure as Hell brought this New Orleans-born audience member to tears.

I was there, too, amongst the throngs of fans, and hardworking reviewwers, last night, too. For the record -- what I heard from The Lumineers's cover of Song For You was a streamlined, emotional, bare-bones, acoustic, stripped bare version of A Song For You, so naked it was almost uncomfortable to witness that kind of honesty. It was unadorned. And reminded me of an early Bradley Cooper outtake Star is Born, as someone who has worked to be very clear, unaffected and without drama about the message. No sloppy 2 AM heart of the Big Easy version, which was what, ironically, moved this particular, viewer to tears. The care and effort it took to get the words out with that much control given how powerfully emotional they actually are. I've had enough drama in my life, and even though Randy Newman might say, should I have been so fortunate enough to have met him, that I am, by any way you slice it, a "Real Emotional Girl," I also appreciate the power of how. you deliver a line. And they delivered these and the simplicity of the melody with heart twisting feeling. It was beautiful. Despite what you might have read, it was truly one of the more beautiful moments of the weekend.
