Although this is an Irish song, I have used it here in a video about the Battle of Culloden.
Another battle fought and lives lost for what? Another example of mans indifference to his fellow man. Nothing has changed and we are still fighting each other. How can we put an end to the killing?
The Battle of Culloden was the final confrontation of the 1745 Jacobite Rising. It took place on 16 April 1746, the battle pitted the Jacobite forces of Charles Edward Stuart against an army commanded by William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland, loyal to the British government. The Jacobite cause to overthrow the reigning House of Hanover and restore the House of Stuart to the British throne was dealt a decisive defeat at Culloden; Charles Stuart never mounted any further attempts to challenge Hanoverian power in Britain.
It was not really a battle of Scotland against England, it was really a war between two Royal houses. It was in many ways a civil war. There were Scots and English on both sides. There is documented evidence that shows that brother was fighting brother in some cases.
The conflict was the last pitched battle fought on British soil, occurring near Inverness in the Scottish Highlands.
Robert Lawrence, British song-writer, singer and guitarist.
