William Whiting, Anglican churchman, wrote these words in 1860, believing God spared his life when a violent storm at sea claimed the ship he was on. Hymn tune MELITA, was composed by Anglican clergyman John B. Dykes, for this text in 1861. Often sung at funerals & popularly adopted by the Navy as its hymn. Appropriate for Veterans & Armistice Day, November 11.
