There are two theories about the origins of this song. 1. The Red River Valley was first written by the Metis people of the Red River Valley in Manitoba Canada in about 1870, It was in the French language. Later it was translated to English except for adieu (a parting phrase in French).
2.The same song was written about the Red River between Texas and Oklahoma.
Both have the same story about rejection and parting and a lonesome cowboy's lament.
