The choral opera “The Light of Paradise” was written by the British composer Paul Mealor, commissioned by the Zurich Chamber Singers. It is based on the autobiographical text “The Booke of Margery Kempe”.
“The Booke” is a very challenging document, addressing the limitations of a woman’s life, of some kind of religious outlier, and of a single traveller in England and Europe in that period, as well as Kempe’s overcoming of these obstacles. These liberties which Kempe carved out for herself are in a stark contrast to her entrapment in a cage of limitations imposed by her self-defined theology.
