Description
Two today for Sunday flashback #1. This song was #1 this date, June 23rd, 1968.
Herb Alpert (born March 31st, 1935) is an American trumpeter who led the band Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass (sometimes called "Herb Alpert and the TJB") in the 1960s. During the same decade, he co-founded A&M Records with Jerry Moss. Alpert has recorded 28 albums that have landed on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart, five of which became No. 1 albums; he has scored 14 platinum albums and 15 gold albums. Alpert is the only musician to hit No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 as both a vocalist ("This Guy's in Love with You", 1968) and an instrumentalist ("Rise", 1979).
Alpert has sold an estimated 72 million records worldwide. He has received many accolades, including a Tony Award and eight Grammy Awards, as well as the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2006, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Alpert was awarded the National Medal of Arts by Barack Obama in 2013.
"This Guy's in Love with You" was a hit song written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David and released by Herb Alpert in May, 1968. Although known primarily for his trumpet playing as the leader of the Tijuana Brass, Alpert sang lead vocals on this solo recording, which was arranged by Bacharach. An earlier recording of the song by British singer Danny Williams with different lyrics, titled "That Guy's in Love", appeared on Williams' 1968 self-titled album.
Music historian Robert Platts quotes Hal David regarding modifications to the original lyric done for Herb Alpert:
"[Alpert] wanted to do that song on a TV special he was doing....It was a song he was going to sing to his wife. And [the original lyric] was not quite appropriate for what he wanted to say. He asked us whether we could change [the lyric] so it would fit what he needed. And I did".
After Herb Alpert's recording became a #1 hit on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart, several versions by well-known female artists were released under the title "This Girl's in Love with You", shifting the title and perspective of the song yet again. These artists included Dionne Warwick, Dusty Springfield, Aretha Franklin, Petula Clark, Ella Fitzgerald, Eydie Gorme, Sammy Davis Jr., Connie Francis, and Diana Ross & The Supremes.
I also have a cover by Rumer if interested.
I remember Paul McCartney stating that The Beach Boys' song 'God Only Knows' was the greatest song ever written. Frank Sinatra said the same of 'Something', Chuck Berry 'Yesterday' and Bob Dylan, 'Wichita Lineman (I have a cover). If I had to make a choice it would be this one. Not sure why but I love the song. Might be the descending chords in the chorus with the ascending background vocals. Or the words. Or the melody. Or the feel. Or....
