"This is about control": Protests erupt in Washington after Trump federalizes DC police

Several dozen protesters gathered in downtown Washington, D.C., on Monday to condemn U.S. President Donald Trump's decision to place the city’s police department under federal control and deploy National Guard troops.
 
"This is not about crime. This is about control. This is not about public safety. This is about power," said a protester, Samantha Davis.
 
"Donald Trump is a white supremacist... He wants to divide us to stop our solidarity. We cannot let him," said another protester.
 
Trump said on Monday he was putting Washington's police department under federal control and ordering the National Guard to deploy to the nation's capital to combat what he said was a wave of lawlessness, despite statistics showing that violent crime hit a 30-year low in 2024.
