Thomas Tallis (c. 1505 - 1585):
LAMENTATIONS OF JEREMIAH II

Thomas Tallis was an English organist and composer whose career spanned the reigns of four monarchs and a long period of religious change. He occupies a primary place in anthologies of English church music, and is considered among the most talented of England's early composers.

This is part two of his 'Lamentations of Jeremiah', which sets to music verses 3-5 of Chapter 1 (Book of Lamentations).

GIMEL. Migravit Iuda propter afflictionem et multitudinem servitutis. Habitavit inter gentes, nec invenit requiem.

DALETH. Omnes persecutores ejus apprehenderunt eam inter angustias. Lugent eo quod non sint qui veniant ad solemnitatem. Omnes portae ejus destructae, sacerdotes ejus gementes. Virgines ejus squalidae, et ipsa oppressa amaritudine.

HETH. Facti sunt hostes ejus in capite, inimici ejus locupletati sunt; quia Dominus locutus est super eam propter multitudinem iniquitatum ejus. Parvuli ejus ducti sunt in captivitatem ante faciem tribulantis.

Ierusalem, convertere ad Dominum Deum tuum.

From the lamentation of Jeremiah the prophet.

C. Juda has become a wanderer on account of her sufferings and the burden of her slavery. She has made her home among gentiles, and has found no rest.

D. All those who persecute her have trapped her in the narrow way. Her people mourn because there are none to come and worship with her. All her portals lie in ruins, and her priests cry in sorrow. Her virgin daughters are defiled, and she is crushed with bitterness.

E. Her enemies lord over her, and her foes multiply; because the Lord has spoken out against her on account of her many sins. Her children are led away captive while she looks on in distress.

Jerusalem, turn again to the Lord your God.
