Flying Fairies of the Silk Road is a pipa concerto composed by the famous pipa player Zhao Cong, commissioned by the China National Traditional Orchestra in 2014. With the folk music collected in Dunhuang, the work was completed in the United States. It has won the first China National Arts Fund award and has been performed hundreds of times at home and abroad. The Silk Road remains eternal like the moon and dazzling like the sun, showering Dunhuang with its glorious glow. As the poem goes: “The sound of horns hits the plum blossom; the exotic cloud is distantly connected to the glow. The Han envoy shepherds with the tally; the royal lady plays pipa on the horseback.” While the geese fly north, a soldier stationed on the border heard a beautiful sound coming from the west with the wind. There’s a flying fairy with pipa in her hands and dressed in gorgeous costumes of the High Tang. From static to dynamic, she becomes a breathtaking apsaras ascending from the painting to the splendid sky. The awe-spiring pipa technique dating back to the ancient Dunhuang has fused with the modern global music languages, presenting the Mogao Grottoes and the pipa with their profound history to the world. A great contribution to the promotion of Chinese national traditional music worldwide.
