With simple tenderness.

American composer Edward MacDowell (1860-1908) wrote a fragment of this melody one morning, crumpled it up and threw it toward the fireplace at their log cabin in New Hampshire. He missed. His wife picked it up, played it and told him she thought it was a charming melody. He reconsidered, and then agreed, saying that it was quite simple but it reminded him of the wild roses near their cabin. He finished it, and it has become one of MacDowell's most well-known pieces, and one I've loved for many years.
