I first met Aphroditios at A Man To Pet’s Greek night last year where we were both performing. We instantly bonded over Greek divas, the life and times of Azis and my recent experiences on a gypsy pilgrimage in France (!) I found her performances that evening absolutely mesmerising and we kept in touch after the event. Since then I’d managed to catch her perform at a couple of other things, the highlight being her interpretation of Melania Trump during A Man To Pet’s Xmas show. I’ve not laughed so much in a long time. When I found out she was leaving the UK for Cyprus, I knew we had to do something quickly before she left, so back in April, with nothing but a ringlight and a prayer, the wonderful folks at Bar Dona offered us their space to shoot a little something special for my song ‘Cabaret’. It’s only my second time directing any sort of video content, and she made it so easy, bringing an intensity and seductiveness the song needed, whilst also vulnerability and sadness behind those gorgeously beat eyes. When I wrote ‘Cabaret’ I always envisioned Liza Minnelli in a smoky dive bar, singing alone to a crowd of zero and Aphroditios did THAT. Thank you Noam for helping me with the edit on this. And my pal Ruth for helping us on the day with lighting and props. It’s a beautiful accompaniment to the song and I hope you all enjoy it as much as I do!!
