Here’s a transcription I’ve done of the Grateful Dead song “Touch of Gray". This track comes from their 1987 album "In The Dark". The bass player on this track was Phil Lesh.

Wow—who knew there was this much going on in the bass part? I remember hearing this on the radio, but I had no idea how involved the bass line actually was. Phil Lesh... he was such a creative, and unique bass player...just wow!

It’s all quarters and eighths on paper, and you'd think you're pretty familiar with those rhythms—but then Phil comes along and shows you there's a whole other way to feel and use them. He’s like a mad scientist with rhythm. 🙂

I’ve got huge respect for Phil Lesh—he deserves to be right near the top of the list of bassists who don’t get their due. And while I’m at it, I’ve got to say how much respect I have for Jerry Garcia too. I know beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but to me, there’s a real deep soul in both his playing and his voice. Like Phil, I think he had a deeper sense of rhythm.

This one actually reads pretty well once you get into it—you just have to stay focused and try to keep up. Honestly, this was one of those tunes that humbled me a bit. And for what it's worth, it took just under 9 hours to get everything you see here done.

There’s some beautiful bass playing in this song. If you’re up for a challenge, I think it’d make a great project tune.
